The award winning 208 acre mixed-use community exemplifies the principles of new urbanism as it evolves to become the commercial, residential and recreational heart of the Town of Oakville. The design of Oak Park draws on traditional planning principles learned from the original commercial and residential core for the Town of Oakville. Emphasis was placed on the establishment of a clearly organized grid of streets and rear laneways. A detailed tertiary plan with a wide range of street-related housing types was enhanced through detailed architectural and landscape guidelines: the placement of garages in rear laneways; the establishment of a strong architectural presence at the street level; and the development of alternative standards for zoning bylaws, together gave building forms and facades emphasis to the creation of vibrant streetscapes which encourage opportunities for social exchange.
