About the Project
Niagara on the Green is a mixed use, urban village community concept, inspired both in physical planning and design by the existing old Town of Niagara-on-the- Lake. The community is planned for a 350 acre site within the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake and adjacent to the Niagara Escarpment. The plan is uniquely designed to incorporate opportunities to live, work, shop, and play, all within the same community. The MBTW Group developed the community vision for Niagara on the Green and was responsible for all aspects of planning, urban design, and landscape architecture, including the preparation of the concept plans, draft plan, and the writing of comprehensive urban design guidelines to direct the physical development of the community.
The community was designed by The MBTW Group, incorporating the principles of new urbanism, such as the integration and mixing of land uses; the identification of a central village square; the development of a modified grid pattern, with interconnected streets and pedestrian linkages; a clearly defined hierarchy of main streets; and the distribution of open spaces and civic amenities throughout the community. The integration of the site with a variety of neighbouring land uses presented The MBTW Group with challenges and opportunities in the development of the community plan. With the future Niagara college to the southeast, the Welland Canal to the west, and a future golf course to the south, Niagara on the Green will develop as a self-sufficient, integrated community with the added benefits of recreational and educational opportunities nearby.
MBTW’s involvement from initial planning to final construction will ensure that the community of Niagara on the Green will be implemented as per the initial concept vision. The project was well received and supported by both the Niagara Region and the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. As the fifth and newest village within the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara on the Green will also act as a regional draw for future commercial activity.
