About the Project
The MBTW Group was retained by the City of Toronto to lead a team of consultants in the expansion of Albert Campbell Square. Key project objectives included creating a publicly accessible, mid-block pedestrian linkage and ‘green’ connection from Town Centre Court to Albert Campbell Square. This pedestrian-friendly open space environment accommodates large volumes of pedestrian movement while fostering a sense of place as a forecourt to the Eq1 and Eq2 condominium towers along the site’s southern edge and the Federal office building to the north.
The expansion project provides new and interesting at-grade amenities and pedestrian spaces that are unique to this park and coordinated with the broader objectives for the Albert Campbell Square and the revitalization plan for the Civic Precinct public realm. Amenities include an urban-style children’s playground, shade canopies, seating nodes, off-leash area, soft landscaping and trees and barrier-free and accessible access throughout.
As a major pedestrian thoroughfare, it was imperative to create a park setting that accommodates visitors of all ages and abilities while enhancing safety, comfort and inclusiveness. Material selection was carefully conducted to ensure that the landscape will be attractive, sustainable and durable while coordinating respectfully with existing adjacent spaces and infrastructure below grade.
