About the Project

Located inside Thunderbird Park - the athletic precinct located within the University of British Columbia, Point Grey Campus – the existing Varsity Baseball Diamond was the first artificial turf baseball diamond in British Columbia.  Nearing the end of its lifecycle and need of renovation, UBC Athletics developed a new vision for an upgraded and expanded facility that would better serve the sports and recreation needs of both the University and local community programs.

In 2018, MBTW was selected by UBC Athletic to lead the design and implementation process that converted the existing baseball stadium into the new Tourmaline West Stadium.  As a high-performance baseball facility, the new design included:

• A new synthetic turf sports field system suited for baseball use.

• Sunken, covered dugouts (home and away).

• Outfield bullpens (home and away).

• Portable mound to allow for diamond conversion for softball, slo-pitch and little league games.

• Raised spectator seating with integrated press box.

• Backstop netting (custom pole and tension wire system).

• Batter’s eye.

• Electronic scoreboard.

• Sports field lighting (LED).

• Entrance gate and associate fan zone / vendor area.

• Perimeter fencing.

• Field maintenance and storage area.

Tourmaline stadium remains the home of the UBC Thunderbirds varsity and junior varsity baseball teams.

Note: Tourmaline West Stadium was done in collaboration with Richard Findlay Landscape Architect – a full-service consulting firm located in Vancouver.
